Devlog - Reuben's Route (Progress 2)

It's been a while since my last update here so I wanted to quickly check in just to give a status report. 

In my last update I had just finished Reuben's route draft and it was 111,000 words uncoded.

I revised Reuben's route twice since then. It ended up at about 117,000 words uncoded but...once I coded it, it ended up at just under 110,000 words since the routes always lose a fair amount when I convert them to functional code. This brings the game's total word count to 926,000 words. 😱😱

So after going through several revisions, I ran the chapters through a editing software to catch as many of those smaller typos and grammar issues (and missing commas, etc) as possible. As I said, I scripted the route (meaning I put it in renpy and formatted it to be playable code.)

I have set up preliminary scoring for his route - it still needs to be tested and probably tweaked a little, though. I made the chapter cards with the chapter titles and coded those in. I made a first pass through the route to code in the major BG changes; I will probably be tweaking these as well, but it's useful to have those done up front when I start testing. I also, of course, edited and coded any Reuben-specific BGs that were needed, so those are all in the game now too.

I also made mock-ups of Reuben's flowchart. I noticed that most of Reuben's branching is happening in small variations rather than major branching at the choices (he does also have a few more choices than other routes). But there are just a ton of little variations.

dreamed about working on Reuben's sprites...but I didn't actually do it. 🤣🤣 So I guess that doesn't count... 😩

So with the writing done, I would say about half the work on Reuben's route is complete. There's still a lot to do. I have to:

  • code the Music and SFX
  • create a few BG animations. 
  • create 4 unique sprites + 1 "Bob" (IE an 'extra')
  • create several new outfits for Morgan and Reuben
  • code in all the sprite expressions (there are about 6000 - 6500 expression changes per route. So...that's fun.)
  • create the actual flowcharts with the proper images
  • code those in
  • draw the CGs and code those in
  • Then test everything


So there's still a fair amount of work to be done in this route. Although I personally consider the writing to be the biggest hurdle, obviously there's a lot of work in every single route and it'll be a while yet before Reuben is ready for players. But I am making progress.

I really do love your writing, and the world (universe) of this game especially. Like, I wish there was more stuff set in it, it's well built and interesting. Your characters are great too.

I got the vibes he was sweet just from the little we see him so that is already coming across! I love seeing him in Caissa's route trying to help you and in Quill's route really just trying to do what's right! I really liked him and am so happy to see him in his entirety!

(Also very excited to see Yuu and what struggles he will face with the obvious breach of privacy and disregard for you as a person! I work in healthcare and am anticipating a massive blow up if he realizes they tried to kidnap his patient and he actually helped them do it almost! ((if it goes that way)))

I then also recently bought your other game Changeling after I came across Gilded Shadows and found myself really loving your games😆, they're both so amazing (even tho im not done with both yet🙈), and I'm loving how you world build. 

Omg and let's not forget the branching? All of the RO routes you make, seem to have their own different branching  personal stories/paths with the MC.  Versus like you playing an MC on very similar routes for all of them with mostly common route activity 🥲. So yeah, please keep up the great work! I hope you continue to make more amazing games after you finish Gilded Shadows! I would love to keep playing your stories. They're so fun☺️ (and the romance is a plus🤣)!

Thank you! World building is one of my favourite parts of writing, honestly! 

I honestly prefer giving everyone their own self-contained story. My current side project (which will probably be the next one I release) is the other style you mention where all the routes overlap each other and follow a single plot. I wanted to try that style out just as an experiment, since I've never done it. And I have to say that I don't enjoy writing that way.

It's so much more fun for me to put all the LIs in their own path so I can give them a different story.

That will definitely stay my strategy going forward because it's way more fun for me! ╰(*°▽°*)╯

Of course! And world building really is fun, I find it one of my fav aspects of story writing, when I manage to write here or there. And it'll be interesting to see your side project either way! Nothing wrong with overlapping paths, those stories can be fun too! Can't wait to see your future games😆🙌!

I think it'll be a fun project. But definitely the only one in that style. Have to finish GS first though. I keep having to remind myself there's still a fair bit of work in this project before it's done. ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

I sometimes like getting to see different characters reacting to the same situation - which you don't always get to see when everyone has a unique story.

But for the same situation/different characters thing to be engagement, the reactions and vibe of each character really have to differ substantially. I think that's the weakness of the overlapping route structure. It has the potential to be quite engaging, in my opinion, but it's really hard to execute that. (Speaking from experience, my "overlapping route" game has been SO hard to write. It's way, way harder than I thought it would be!)

I could ramble on about game structure for a long time, but that's more suited to Discord. LoL! I have a lot of thoughts about what makes the different structures fun to play and also what makes them fun to create, though.

I do prefer giving everyone their own story, though. So this one project will be the only one with overlapping routes. I'm glad I'm trying it out but I don't think it's my writing preference. ( •̀ ω •́ )✧

I should clarify. I do like some games where routes overlap! I think a great example of this is the game Reverie Ebon Light. They allow the MC to have vastly different personalities and still achieve favorable outcomes and have enough variation in routes to have high replay ability. It is also free and has an extensive glossary! I think I've just played too many recently that have been not as fun to play. It can definitely be a great and different way to tell a story and yes seeing different characters reactions (especially where they interact with each other) is always interesting.

The dev did such a great job of making it interesting to replay. That is definitely the style of experience I'd like to create too - something where people look forward to replaying to see how other characters act in their unique character moments.
